Originally from Florida, Garrett and his wife Lara, have three sons Jackson, Tyler, and Hunter. Garrett graduated from Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida, then completed a Master of Divinity at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Prior to coming to La Plata Baptist Church, Garrett had interned at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida; First Baptist Church in Hilliard, Florida and Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. After Garrett finished seminary training he then interned and served on staff at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In April of 2010, he accepted the call to pastor La Plata Baptist Church. Garrett enjoys spending time with his family. That time includes going to parks, sporting events, and visiting with friends. They especially enjoy the summer months because of the outdoors. Garrett has written posts for 9marks and he has written Explore devotionals for the Good Book Company. His contributions include devotionals on the Psalms, all of Ezekiel, and all of 2 Chronicles. Pastor Garrett commends the work of 9Marks Ministries, the Gospel Coalition, the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, and the Southern Baptist Convention. He also provides the following doctrinal affirmations as a summary of his doctrinal beliefs and convictions. However, in keeping with the introduction to the Baptist Faith &Message 2000, he affirms that “the sole authority for faith and practice among Baptists is the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Confessions are only guides in interpretation, having no authority over the conscience." (See links below.)
