Originally from Florida, Garrett and his wife Lara have three sons - Jackson, Tyler, and Hunter. Garrett graduated from Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida, then completed a Master of Divinity at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. During college and seminary, Garrett worked for UPS, waited tables, and worked for the family logging business in northeast Florida.
Prior to coming to La Plata Baptist Church, Garrett interned at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, First Baptist Church in Hilliard, Florida, and Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. After finishing seminary training, Garrett interned and served on staff at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In April of 2010, he accepted the call to pastor La Plata Baptist Church. Garrett enjoys spending time with his family, which includes going to parks, sporting events, and visiting with friends. He and his family especially enjoy the summer months and the ability to be outdoors. Garrett has written posts for 9marks and he has written Explore devotionals for the Good Book Company. His contributions include devotionals on the Psalms as well as the entirety of Ezekiel and 2 Chronicles. Garrett commends the work of The Pillar Network, 9Marks, Ligonier Ministries, Core Christianity, Christ Over All, Answers in Genesis, The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Love Worth Finding, and the Southern Baptist Convention. He also provides the following doctrinal affirmations as a summary of his doctrinal beliefs and convictions. However, in keeping with the introduction to the Baptist Faith & Message 2000, he affirms that “the sole authority for faith and practice among Baptists is the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Confessions are only guides in interpretation, having no authority over the conscience." (See links below.)
